Living Room Makeover

I'm not sure what it is about taking down the Christmas decorations but it always makes my home feel so bare and boring. I instantly want to decorate and I tease myself scanning Pinterest and Instagram.

After a few days of lusting over soft furnishings I decided to just go for it and start with the heart of our home, the living room.

We started by removing the ugly fire place we had. Originally it was a dark brown colour and clashed with everything in the room so last year I painted it white which looked much better but to be honest we never used the fireplace and it wasn't centre to the wall which really bothered me so I decided to just remove it and get it plastered over. It looks so much better without it and gives us much more space.

We also removed all the old doors as they had at least 10 years worth of gloss on them and had definitely seen better days. Sadly, our new ones don't get fitted for another 2 weeks so I've got a very excited puppy with free roam at the minute. Fun and games eh.

When I told people the colour scheme I wanted, I got a few funny looks and scrunched up faces. I suppose grey and mustard doesn't sound too Instagramic but it's different and I really like it, obviously, I chose it. I've chosen mustard/ochre accessories so when I decide to change colour scheme, I can quite easily by just changing the cushions etc.

We've only had our sofa for 12 months and there's nothing wrong with it apart from the cushions had seen better days so I just replaced them and bought an ottoman and footstool to match. Minnie loves sitting on the ottoman in front of the window and it's great to put her toys in rather than having them laying around everywhere!

Large sofa back cushions are from Dunelm. Smaller grey and ochre cushions are from George, Asda. The prints and frames are from Ebay.

I chose a shade of grey paint from Dulux - Goose Down but I found it to be too blue toned for my taste so we went back to the colour we had before, again from Dulux but in the shade Egyptian Cotton, I always go for matte paint rather than silk. The only thing left to do is gloss, we decided to wait for that as we'll need to gloss the new doors when they come and the door frames will probably get scraped and chipped during fitting.

I decided to go for a darker grey carpet to what I had before. I absolutely love it but it was such a carry on getting it in with living on the first floor, it had to come in via the balcony and there was definitely a few colourful words shrieked!

Lamp is from Next, throw is from George, Asda, the ottoman and footstool was purchased on Ebay and my gorgeous furball is admiring the new carpet.

There's just a few finishing touches to go, I'm still looking for a new light shade for the ceiling and something for the back wall but it's all coming together and eventually feels like home again.

Print and frame from Ebay and lamp is from Next.              My florist made this artificial arrangement.

We've decided to do one room at a time so keep checking back for my little home makeover series.

Candles are all from George, Asda, both white units are from Argos, curtains and blind is from Dunelm.

I'd love to hear about any decorating plans you've got for this year.
This in a sponsored post however all words, pictures and opinions are my own.

  2. WOW, great effort! Is it me, or are your picture frames behind the sofa at a weird angle? I sometimes intentionally do that just to draw attention to things :)

  11. Living rooms, too, need a face lift once in a while. I like that you used neutral colors mostly. I myself would've done the same since I want my living room to have very few distractions since it's the principal area where conversations take place. :)

  12. Renovation can be a big project hence we are still thinking about it, probably in the next few years time!

You guys did a great job renovating the place! I love how it turns out and the grey carpet and the little mustard highlights you choose to bright up the room. Well done with the color scheme. If i were you I would also add something in lighter blue (like a blue vase) to make the yellow stands out more! :)

  15. I just love your new space Chelsea, so well done! My husband and I are crazy fans of remodeling, so I can definitely relate with needing/wanting to change things up. I've become a huge fan of mustard colors this fall and winter. After spotting a lot of girls on campus wearing it, I thought "Huh" And paired with grey, it's wonderful. Really excited to see what room you decide to do next. x
