A Minnie Update

I can't quite believe I've had my gorgeous furbaby for almost 9 months. In some ways it feels like she's been here for 2 minutes but in other ways, it's as though she's been here forever.

In case you didn't know, this is Minnie, she's our 11 month old Bichon Frise.

I can't believe how well she's settled in. I'll be honest though, as much as we loved her from the very start, she was a handful for the first 6 months. I felt like an exhausted parent and often had to lock myself in the bathroom just for 5 minutes peace.

Something changed instantly though. She had her first heat about 7 weeks ago and overnight she became a different little girl.

Before she was disobedient, noisy and destructive (all whilst being super cute) but now she's so cuddly, loves attention, understands the difference between playtime and bedtime and she's much more obedient.

She now sits and allows me to brush her, clean her face (sometimes) and do all the things she really didn't like me doing before. She has mastered giving a paw, a hi5 and pretending to box. It's so cute to see.

Minnie was crate trained and that's where she slept but she was waking us up at silly o clock each morning, once her behaviour improved we decided to trial her with free run of the house. So far so good. She's absolutely loving the freedom and sleeps in a different space each night. She is adorable and there's nothing better than waking up to a fluffy face looking back at you with their tail wagging ready to kiss your face.

She really is a bundle of love and joy and I'm so pleased with her progress. She is fantastic with visitors, she's always so see new and old faces and is great with children and other dogs which I'm pleased about.

Now we just need to work on the grooming as it's something she really does not like and groomers find her very difficult to do. She's just so happy and wants to kiss and cuddle everyone. Minnie's face is a little stained which is something I queried with the vets and groomers, they've said it's totally normal for a Bichon to have facial stains (especially when they have their long coat) and not to do anything. I couldn't ever do what some owners so and bleach her, she's adorable with and without her little stains! I now just bathe her face with warm water and she will be shorter during spring and summer which will make it much less noticeable.

If you have any dog training tips or any tips for grooming, I'd love to hear them please.

We will see you next month for Minnie's first birthday!

  2. Oh my goodness, how adorable! I have a dog just like this back home. I must warn you, training little dogs can be tough. Here are some tips from my experience:)

    1. Puppy proof your house!! baby gates, puppy pads, crate.
    2. Be unpredictable! Dogs are pretty good at figuring out when you have treats and when you don’t
    3. Use training treats strategically. For things she already knows (e.g., sit), use lower-value treats, like pieces of her kibble. When you want to encourage her to learn a new behavior, use higher-value treats. The reward should be commensurate with the difficulty of the task. Sort of like humans :)
    4. Get a training repetition routine and sneak it in before meals, potty breaks, etc. It's hard to find blocks of time and when they are first learning, if you don't keep up on it, they forget. I took my dog to doggy school but then after just figured she was ready, no such luck. Dogs take ALOT of practice before they master it all.

Best of luck! cant wait to see updates!

  3. I unfortunately have no tips for you on the dog training or grooming front, but I do think she's the absolute cutest thing. What breed is she? Looks Bijon (or however that's spelled).

  5. Aww Minnie is absolutely gorgeous and I am glad she has settled in. I can totally relate to the puppy stages, they can be really draining but it is all so rewarding. I am sure she loves getting to decide where she sleeps, such a cutie!

  18. Wow, Minnie is so adorable, So you got your exhausted parent training before she became obedient, lol. I love the fact that she has learnt Hi-5 and allows you to brush her and do all things she didn't like before, how amazing that would have been.
